PIN (Postal Index Number) code is a 6-digit number used by India Post to identify individual post offices and delivery zones. It was introduced in August 1972 and covers all of India, making it easier to sort and deliver mail efficiently across the country.
Indian PIN codes are exactly 6 digits long. The first digit represents the postal zone (1–9), the second indicates the sub-zone (state or group of states), the third digit represents the sorting district, and the last three digits identify the specific delivery post office.
H.O stands for Head Office (the main post office of a district or division), S.O stands for Sub Office (a branch serving a larger area under an H.O), and B.O stands for Branch Office (the smallest unit, usually in a village or specific locality). Together they form the three-tier India Post network.
Use the search box on this page to type your area name, post office name, or 6-digit PIN code. You can also use the PIN Code Validator below to instantly look up any 6-digit PIN. Alternatively, browse by state using the 'Browse by State' section to drill down to your district and post office.
They serve the same purpose but PIN codes are specific to India's postal system. India uses 6-digit PIN codes while the US uses 5-digit ZIP codes. You can use an Indian PIN code wherever a ZIP or postal code is asked for on international forms when shipping to or from India.
Write: [Recipient Name] / [Building, Street, Locality] / [City/Town] / [District, State — PIN CODE] / INDIA. Always include the 6-digit PIN code to ensure correct delivery and to help customs and postal services identify the destination.
India has over 1.5 lakh (150,000+) post offices as per India Post records, making it the largest postal network in the world. These include Head Offices (H.O), Sub Offices (S.O), and Branch Offices (B.O) spread across all 35 states and union territories.
India is divided into 9 postal zones numbered 1–9. Zone 1 covers Delhi (11x), Zone 2 covers Andhra Pradesh and UP, Zones 3–4 cover Maharashtra and Karnataka, Zone 5 covers Rajasthan and Gujarat, Zone 6 covers Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Zone 7 covers West Bengal and Northeast, and Zone 8 covers Bihar and MP. The first digit of any PIN code reveals its postal zone.
