India Post handles millions of articles every day. The faster sorters and postmen can read your address, the faster your mail arrives. An incorrectly formatted address — especially a missing or wrong PIN code — can send a letter to the wrong sorting office and add days or weeks to delivery.
The Standard Indian Address Format
India Post recommends the following order for a domestic postal address:
- Recipient's name
- House / flat number, building name
- Street name / lane / road
- Locality / area / colony
- City / town / village
- District (especially important for rural areas)
- State — PIN code
- INDIA (only required for international mail)
Domestic Address Example
Rajesh Kumar
Flat 4B, Sunrise Apartments
MG Road, Lalbagh
Lucknow
Uttar Pradesh — 226001
International Address Example (Mail Sent from Abroad)
Priya Sharma
12, Nehru Street
T. Nagar
Chennai — 600017
Tamil Nadu
INDIA
Rural Address Example
For villages, always include the post office name and district to help the Branch Office postman identify the exact locality:
Suresh Yadav
Village Rampur Kalan
Post Office: Bijnor
District: Bijnor
Uttar Pradesh — 246701
Common Mistakes People Make
- Missing PIN code — Never leave this out. It is the most important sorting element for automated machines.
- Wrong PIN code — Using the PIN of a nearby city or outdated code. Always verify before posting.
- PIN on the same line as the city — Place the PIN code on its own line or clearly separated by a dash. "Lucknow 226001" is harder for automated readers than "Lucknow — 226001" on its own line.
- No state name — State is essential for disambiguation. There are multiple "Salem" and "Rampur" cities in India.
- Writing the address too small — On physical letters, use a pen with clear, dark ink. Faded or tiny writing causes missorting.
Addressing for Speed Post and Registered Post
For Speed Post (eMO, e-Parcel) and Registered articles, print the address clearly in block capitals. The sender's address must appear on the back of the envelope or the top-left corner of the front. This allows India Post to return the article if it cannot be delivered.
Addressing Courier Shipments
For private couriers (DTDC, BlueDart, Delhivery, etc.), the address format is the same but you will fill it into an online form. Always:
- Enter the correct PIN code first — most platforms use it to determine deliverability
- Include a mobile number — delivery agents call before arriving
- Add a landmark for difficult-to-find locations
